Linda Mwananchi brigades storm the historical Tononoka ground with a message of forming a political party for next year’s general election.
The Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna-led ODM faction told the crowd on March 29, 2026 that they were ready to face off with the broad-based government antagonists in 2027.
To actualise this high-stakes contest against President William Ruto’s government, they urged their youthful supporters to register as voters in order to boost their numbers for contestation.
At a charged gathering in Mombasa County, the defiant ODM rebels said only registration as voters would guarantee the envisaged political change and development for Kenyans.
“We urge Kenyans to register in large numbers so that we can edge President William Ruto in the 2027 general elections,” the senator declared drawing loud cheers from the energized crowd.
All the faction leadership – James Orengo (Siaya governor), Godfrey Otsotsi (Vihiga senator), and Babu Owino (MP Embakasi…) – displayed their influence on organic crowd that went wild whenever they uttered bold statements against the ruling regime.
Each one who spoke took a swipe at the direction Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) took to associate with ruling party which they viewed with a lot of skepticism.
Sifuna criticised what he described as exclusionary tendencies within ODM saying this threatened the core ideals and values of the party.
“ODM can’t be a party of expelling leaders. That is not what the late Raila built it for. Raila built a party that welcomes all leaders not one that sends them away.”
The existing rift came in the fore when the senator said he was not ready to be a secretary general of the current party leader Oburu Odinga.
“I am not ready to be a secretary general of Oburu Odinga,” telling him to look for his own SG. “Not me!”.

The speeches let the cat out of the bag with plans to build the movement into a political outfit to challenge President Ruto’s re-election bid.
Governor Orengo asked Kenyans to arm themselves with voting cards to throw out the current authoritarian regime current.
“We will do all it takes to ensure that President William Ruto is not returned to power in 2027.”
On his part, Sen Otsotsi distanced himself from ODM internal wrangles saying his loyalty is to the people of Kenya and Linda Mwananchi movement.
“I want to announce that I will not contest any position in the ODM party, but I will remain a leader of the Linda Mwananchi faction.”
The choice of Mombasa as the rallying point reflects a calculated political strategy.
The coastal region, with its youthful demographic and history of opposition support, offered the fertile ground for grassroots mobilization.
The strong turnout of young people, particularly Gen Z supporters, highlighted a deliberate push by the faction to tap into youth-driven political energy, increasingly seen as a decisive factor in future elections.
From early morning processions to coordinated chants, the rally projected an image of unity and momentum with organizers keen to position the movement as a credible alternative voice.
The most significant undertone of the rally was the growing suggestion that the Linda Mwananchi brigades could chart its own political path.
Although no formal declaration was made, repeated hints about forming a new political party point to a possible split from ODM an outcome that could significantly reshape Kenya’s opposition landscape.
Political analysts note that such a move could either fragment opposition support or reinvigorate it by offering voters a fresh platform anchored on reform and inclusivity.
As Kenya moves closer to the 2027 General Election, the emergence of the Linda Mwananchi faction signals a period of uncertainty and realignment within opposition ranks.

Whether it remains a pressure group within ODM or evolves into a fully-fledged political party, its growing influence is already reshaping political discourse.
For now, its message is clear and urgent: mobilize, register, and prepare for a defining electoral contest that could alter the country’s political trajectory.
