Former Chief Justice David Maraga has dismissed unnamed people pressurizing him to step down and join the united opposition saying his 2027 presidential bid was irreversible.

At a meeting organised by United Green Movement (UGM) party coordinators at the Baobab Beach Resort and Spa in Nyali of Mombasa County, the CJ was categorical that his bid was final and non-negotiable.

To the UGM coordinators, Maraga said: “I will not step down for anyone. My decision to oust President Ruto in 2027 is final!”

His stance drew cheers and ululations from party members and supporters in attendance.

According to him he was determined to restore constitutional order and offer a leadership that respects the rule of law, human rights and justice for all.

Maraga, who served as Kenya’s CJ from 2016 to 2021, accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of undermining constitutional values, promoting impunity, and condone corruption.

“President Ruto is not above the law—nor are the police. If youths protesting for their rights are guilty of any crimes, let them be taken to court and charged according to the law,” he said.

Vision for Law-Governed Nation

The CJ emphasized that his presidency would be anchored on five key pillars: constitutionalism, accountability, equal opportunity, justice, and people-centered governance.

“My administration will be grounded in the Constitution. I will ensure the Head of State is not above the law. Immunity will only apply while in office, and once out of office, any wrongdoing must be prosecuted.”

He said his entry into politics was prompted by what he termed as “constitutional crisis” under the current regime that has defied all manner of constitutionalism.

“Sometimes it feels like we are in a state of civil war. That is why I’ve left legal practice and joined politics—to salvage this nation from poor governance and lawlessness.”

Maraga, accompanied by UGM party co-leader Neto Agostinho, said the UGM was preparing to field candidates in the upcoming by-elections across the country.

The co-leader also touted the party’s focus on job creation through green economy initiatives with a bias of the Coast region.

“The Coast region is rich in untapped resources and with our stand for green jobs: we will invest in the blue economy, coconut farming, and the fishing industry to create jobs for our youth.”

According to him the party will soon unveil candidates for all vacant seats in the October mini-polls as announced by IEBC.

He expressed confidence his party’s growing popularity would be an added advantage for all aspirants seeking its ticket.

On his part, Maraga reiterated that his leadership would remain true to the constitutional spirit and not be driven by personal interests or political convenience.

“Kenya needs leaders who are not only elected by the people but also governed by the Constitution. That is what I offer,” he said.

He promised to end nepotism and favouritism in public appointments, and instead establish fair recruitment processes to combat systemic corruption.

The CJ, who is now fully active in political life gave strong indications of purpose:

“I am here to stay. I am not running for political relevance I am running to fix this country!
