Mombasa has activated a countywide emergency response plan and deployed drones for real-time flood monitoring following a heavy rainfall advisory from the Kenya Meteorological Department.
Governor Abdulswamand Nassir said the move was aimed at enhancing preparedness and minimizing the impact of expected heavy rains.
The projected intensity of rains in the coming days is likely to affected Jomvu, Kisauni and Nyali subcounties.
The announcement followed a high-level multi-agency coordination meeting chaired by county leadership to activate rapid response measures designed to safeguard lives, infrastructure and essential services.
“Among the key interventions agreed upon is the deployment of drones to provide real-time surveillance of flood-prone zones, enabling faster response and better coordination among emergency teams,” he said.

The county is working in collaboration with several national agencies and partners, including Kenya Power and Lighting Company, Kenya National Highways Authority, Kenya Red Cross Society, Kenya Forest Service and Kenya Wildlife Service.
The agencies have committed to immediate measures, including enhanced power restoration readiness, clearing of critical road sections, pre-positioning of rescue boats, strengthening of emergency health services and accelerated drainage clearance in flood-prone areas.
In addition, the county has temporarily suspended construction and excavation activities to reduce risks associated with soil erosion and water obstruction.
Inspectorate teams have also been reinforced across affected areas to ensure compliance and support emergency operations.

“Preparedness is our first line of defense,” the county boss said urging residents to remain vigilant, avoid flooded areas and promptly report emergencies through the toll-free line 1599.
Authorities said they will continue to closely monitor the situation and issue updates as weather conditions evolve.
