The second call of luxury cruise vessel MV Viking Sky has significantly boosted the coastal economy after docking at the port with 789 passengers and 476 crew members on board.

The vessel, operated by Viking Ocean Cruises, arrived early Thursday morning, becomes the fifth cruise liner to call at the Kenyan coast this season.

According to Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) two more vessels are expected before the close of the cruise circuit signaling sustained momentum in maritime tourism.

Sailing from Seychelles, the ship is scheduled to stay in Mombasa for three days. An extended duration that tourism stakeholders say will translate into increased spending across hospitality, transport, and tour services.

Industry players note that most of the high-value tourists are expected to visit Kenya’s renowned national parks, injecting revenue into the broader tourism value chain.

The influx is projected to benefit hotels, tour operators, curio traders, and local transport providers, reinforcing the sector’s recovery and growth.

KPA manager for security services Tony Kibwana welcomed the vessel on behalf of the managing director Captain William Ruto who said the arrival underscores the port’s growing competitiveness as a cruise destination.

“The arrival of this vessel underscores the importance of Mombasa and the country in handling cruise passengers. We look forward to more vessels arriving in the coming months,” he said.

On his part, Erustus Kanga, Kenya Wildlife Service director general, described the vessel’s arrival as a strong signal of Kenya’s rising profile along the Indian Ocean cruise circuit.

He noted that enhanced incentives in national parks are expected to attract more cruise tourists, positioning Kenya as a unique destination that blends coastal tourism with wildlife experiences.

“Today’s arrival is not just another cruise stop. Each vessel and every visitor reflect increasing global confidence in Kenya as a safe, diverse, and experience-rich destination,” he said.

The latest call also marks exactly one year since MV Viking Sky’s maiden visit to Mombasa, when it docked with 845 passengers and 469 crew members.

The repeat visit highlights growing investor and traveler confidence in Kenya’s cruise tourism segment.

The steady stream of cruise liners is strengthening Mombasa’s position as a regional maritime hub while opening up new business opportunities in logistics, hospitality, and excursion services, key drivers of the blue economy.
