Outgoing Nyali Golf and Country Club Lady Captain Hilda Mugure capped her farewell in style after storming to victory at the Lady Captain’s (Susan Mwangi) Prize Golf Tournament held over the weekend at the par-71 Seafront Mombasa Golf Club.

Even as she hands over leadership at Nyali, Mugure let her clubs do the talking, braving the swirling Indian Ocean winds to card an excellent 37 stableford points and emerge the overall winner in the 18-hole tournament.

Playing off handicap 18, Mugure produced a steady round marked by solid drives and precise putting on the tricky seaside greens to outshine a strong field.

“The rhythm across the course was challenging, but my solid swings and skillful putting on the greens made my day. I am totally thrilled to have won,” she said.

The tournament was organised by Seafront’s outgoing Lady Captain Susan Mwangi as a farewell event to members and friends following the completion of her one-year tenure in office.

“This is thanks to the club, sponsors and everyone who made this tournament special. To my fellow competitors, you all played great,” she added during a evening dinner at the clubs facility.

Mwangi handed over the reins to her vice-captain Gladys Kiprono, bringing to a close what she described as a challenging yet fruitful year.

“It has been a challenging year but full of success with the help of my board members and supporters,” said Mwangi.

In the subsidiary prizes, former Lady Captain Gladys Kasi, playing off handicap 24, clinched the ladies’ winner award after posting 34 points.

Handicap 30 golfer Constance Achila finished runner-up on countback with 33 points, tying on the same score with the third-placed handicap 16 player.

“We have increased ladies’ membership and hosted several successful tournaments. Congratulations to our winners for the amazing golf displayed, and thanks to our sponsors for making the day a success,” she added.

The well-attended tournament provided a fitting farewell for Mwangi and a memorable triumph for Mugure, who proved her class both in leadership and on the fairways.
