Shee Kupi, a peacebuilding and disaster management practitioner from Lamu County, has been recognized as a nominee in the Upcoming Human Rights Defender of the Year category at the 10th Human Rights Defenders (HRD) Awards organized by the Defenders Coalition.

He also received a certificate in recognition of his extraordinary bravery and leadership in championing human rights-based approaches to countering violent extremism, and for his consistent advocacy against the historical marginalisation of communities in Lamu.

Kupi, who serves as Director of Peacebuilding and Disaster Management in Lamu, is known for advancing human rights, peacebuilding, and community resilience in fragile areas along the Kenya–Somalia border.

His work includes promoting peaceful coexistence, strengthening community trust, and supporting vulnerable populations like refugees, Boni IDPs and other marginalized sect affected by insecurity and climate shocks.

In his remarks, Kupi dedicated the recognition to communities in the border region, noting their resilience in the face of persistent challenges.

“I stand as proof that it is possible to serve within government and still uphold human rights—peacefully, professionally, and transparently.”

He acknowledged the Rotary family through the Rotary Peace Fellowship for equipping him with professional skills to advance human rights in complex environments.

According to the award jury, Kupi demonstrated a rare ability to balance public service with grassroots human rights advocacy, often operating in high-risk environments while maintaining a peaceful and community-centered approach.
