The government has been asked to increase funding to the arts and creative industry in the country in a bid to economically empower young people.

The funding, according to players, should also be directed towards improving the standards of theater centers, some of which are in dilapidated status.

There is urgency to increase theatres such as Little Theater Club (LTC) so as to give the youth chances to develop their talents. This calls upon the national and county governments should put more emphasis especially on budgeting of such theatres.

The stakeholders say the sector gets very little in terms of national buts,we are funded and we ask the government to consider increasing the budget so as we can improve on the status of the activities,” said Collins Mangincho, deputy chair of LTC.

Speaking during the world theater day at the little theater club, the deputy says there is a need to increase attendance at the theater clubs through good content.

LTC secretary Mbashir Shambi said youth talents should continue to be nurtured so as to economically empower them.

“These activities have reminded us about using art to foster peace in the country. They have brought youth together and entertained, educated and shared thoughts among the young people,” he said.

They spoke during the marking of world theater day on Thursday 27, 2025 which started with a poetry week on March 21, 2025.

The activities included storytelling, performances, music concerts, plays and performances of children which happened in the Bangladesh area of Jomvu in Mombasa County.

“We should encourage people to embrace local arts so that we can build our young people’s talents and ensure we grow them economically.”

World Theatre Day is celebrated every year on March 27. Designated by the International Theatre Institute (ITI) in 1961. This day celebrates the essence, beauty, and importance of theatre arts, their significant role in entertainment, and the symbolic impact that theatre has on life.

This day also serves to inform governments, politicians, institutions, and stakeholders around the world who have not yet realized the value of theatre to the people and its potential for economic growth.
