Celebrations broke out in Mombasa’s central business district following the appointment of EALA MP Hassan Omar as the new acting party secretary general.
On Friday morning, August 2, 2024, the committee said vice-chairperson Hassan Omar will now act as the SG on interim basis replacing the immediate former boss Cleophas Malala.
Malala was ejected from his position during a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting presided over by the party’s national chairperson, Cecil Mbarire.
“The appointment of Cleophas Malala as the interim secretary general is hereby revoked. These changes are effective immediately,” the party’s statement reads in short this Friday.
The statement adds:
“Hassan Omar, the party’s vice chair, has been appointed as the acting secretary general.”
It continues: “Upon wide and consultative deliberations, and in compliance with party mandate under Article 8.2 of the Party Constitution, the National Executive Committee has determined to designate the Vice-chairperson, Hassan Omar Hassan, to act as the secretary general on an interim basis.”
On learning of these change, Omar’s supporters in Mombasa congregated at the Makadara grounds before marching through Digo Road and along Kenyatta Avenue to celebrate the new developments.
Led by Mutungwa Wambua and Said Twaha, they said Omar deserved the position owing to his past and vast experience of serving in different capacities within and without the party.
Wambua, who is contesting for Mombasa County secretarial position in the UDA party led his troops to praise the party national organ for appointing the EALA legislator.
“Omar is a person who has been tested in leadership roles and that may have convinced the party leading to this appointment. We thank the President and the party national organ for considering our son of the soil,” said Wambua.
Omar’s appointment, however, seems to escalate the bad blood between him and the Nyali MP Mohamed Ali who is leading another party faction against Omar ahead of the expected UDA party grassroots elections.
The supporters now want the MP to be kicked out of the party for allegedly fueling divisions and rocking the party from within.
They called on the newly appointed SG to crack the whip and bring sanity in the party within Mombasa County and beyond.
“We want to warn Mohamed Ali to stop his theatrics. We know he has been dividing the party here in Mombasa, and now that Omar is in power, Ali should prepare to walk out peacefully,“ he said.
