Kwale Stadium Boosts Youth Talent Development and Sports Growth

The completion of Kwale Stadium has transformed sports in Kwale County providing local athletes with a modern venue to develop their talents while attracting national sporting events to the region.

The stadium, officially opened by President William Ruto during the Mashujaa Day celebrations held in Kwale County in 2024, is the first facility of its scale at the Coast region.

Developed through a partnership between the national government and the Kwale County government, it has a capacity of about 13,000 spectators and is built to international football standards.

Governor Fatuma Achani said the facility has raised county’s profile as a sporting destination enabling it to host high-profile football competitions including Kenya Premier League fixtures and the 2026 Mozzart Bet Cup.

Several top-flight clubs, among them Bandari FC, Tusker FC, Ulinzi Stars, Kenya Police FC and Bidco United, have also played at the venue.

The governor said the county’s investment in sports extends beyond the main stadium with 24 community playing fields established across the area to increase access to sports and encourage young people to pursue their talents while discouraging involvement in drug and substance abuse.

Local football stakeholders say the stadium has become a valuable platform for nurturing talent.

Kwale United coach Hamisi Masusa noted that the facility has motivated young players by giving them an opportunity to train and compete in a professional environment without leaving the county.

Residents Matano Mwinyi and Doni Mwema also welcomed the investment saying improved sports infrastructure is creating new opportunities for young people to build careers in sports while contributing to the county’s social and economic development.
