Green Eagles FC became the first side to book a place in the Sisi ni Dola Cup quarter-finals after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Mtwapa United in the Round of 16 at Mombasa Sports Club.

Paul Otambo’s second-half strike proved decisive as Green Eagles maintained their unbeaten run in the competition, overcoming a resilient Mtwapa United side to keep their title hopes alive.

Green Eagles coach Davis Kocheli praised his players’ discipline but insisted there is still work to do as the tournament enters its knockout stages.

“We are determined to go all the way. The competition is very tough, so we have to remain cautious against every opponent. We are training hard and staying focused,” Kocheli said.

Mtwapa United coach Dhea Kenny admitted his side paid the price for failing to convert the chances they created.

“It is a very competitive tournament. We gave our best, but luck was not on our side. We couldn’t make the most of our opportunities,” he said.

With the competition now at the business end, Dola Group Sports Director Hassan Al Maddy, popularly known as Kipapa, urged fans to continue supporting the tournament.

“The knockout stage is always exciting. Every team that reached the Round of 16 has quality, so supporters should come out in large numbers and enjoy good football,” he said.

Attention now turns to Friday’s Round of 16 clash, where Good Hope FC of Kisauni face Likoni United in another eagerly anticipated encounter.

The second edition of the five-week Sisi ni Dola Cup has drawn teams from Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Tana River and Lamu counties. Organisers have also invited football scouts from across the country to identify emerging talent.

The tournament winners will receive KSh 1 million, while the runners-up will take home KSh 500,000, with all matches being played at Mombasa Sports Club.
