President William Ruto has warned of stern action against opposition leaders accused of fueling hate and divisive politics.

Speaking at Mama Ngina Waterfront during the issuance of more than 33,000 title deeds to squatters, the President told off leaders perpetuating tribal and divisive rhetoric.

He said such leaders have no development agenda and would soon face consequences for their actions.

“Those out to divide the country for selfish interests should be ignored,” he said.

He also linked the recent killing of Rachael Wandeto to what he called “hatred politics” by the opposition adding that those responsible would be held to account.

The President directed land officers to fast-track the subdivision of remaining land so beneficiaries can receive title deeds. He noted that the government has bought land from absentee landlords to resettle over 200,000 squatters across the Coast.

Since taking office, 1.5 million title deeds have been issued nationally, with 381,000 — 25% of the total — allocated to the Coast region. The 33,025 deeds issued Thursday, May 21, 2026 are part of that plan.

According to the President the government is in talks with absentee landlords to resettle about 200,000 households, roughly 1 million people, in the Coast region.

He added that returning port operations to Mombasa was part of the government’s commitment to deliver for Coast residents.

Coast leaders at the event, including six governors, MPs, and Cabinet Secretaries Salim Mvurya and Hassan Joho, pledged to back Ruto’s re-election bid.

They cited his efforts to address the historical land problem and urged residents to support him based on his development record, not propaganda from leaders they said had failed the region.

Ruto maintained that the broad-based government would deliver development despite criticism.

“Detractors cannot stop my vision. I will not be blackmailed by anyone perpetuating tribal bigotry,” he said.
