A deadly cholera outbreak has hit Kwale County, claiming the lives of three people, including a four-year-old child, health officials have confirmed.

According to Mohamed Said, the county’s Epidemic Response Officer, 48 suspected cases have been recorded. Laboratory tests confirmed four positive cases, with a disturbing cross-border link: eight of the suspected patients were Tanzanian nationals.

“Out of the 48 cases, eight were Tanzanians. Many live in Vanga for business and family ties, which increases the risk of spread,” said Said.

Health authorities say cholera outbreaks in Kwale often stem from border areas like Tsunza and Lutsangani, flow in from Changamwe and Port Reitz , Mombasa County

Between April and May, several patients arrived from Tanzania, which has experienced recurring cholera infections since 2024.

“In March, we began receiving Tanzanian patients at Vanga and Jego health centers. Severe cases were referred to Lunga Lunga Hospital,” added Said.

While the situation is under control, Said warned that the region is not yet in the clear.

The county government, in partnership with Plan International, will roll out a major sensitization campaign targeting health workers, school children, and families in high-risk areas.

“We’re training frontline health staff, visiting schools to educate children about safe water, and teaching communities how to prevent infections,” said Said.

Community elders, village heads, chiefs, and assistant chiefs will be engaged to ensure long-term prevention.
