Employee Accused of Stealing Ksh6.9m Risks Arrest for Missing Court Session

An employee of Gateways Marine Services Company in Mombasa accused of stealing property worth Ksh6.9 million risks being arrested for failing to appear in court for twice consecutively.
This is after a Mombasa court was on Friday, May 23, 2025 was forced to postpone the case after the accused Shakil Ali Mohamed claimed to have been admitted in the hospital after suffering dengue fever sickness.
Mombasa Senior Resident Magistrate Gladys Olimo ordered the employee to be arraigned in Court on May 27, 2025, for plea taking after recovery failure to which a warrant of arrest will be issued.
Shakil Ali Mohamed who was to appear in court to face charges of stealing from his employer contrary to Section 281 of the Panel Code failed to turn up.
His lawyer produced hospital documents to prove that the accused was sickness before the magistrate.

The public prosecutor Brenda Ogada had asked the court to issue a warrant of arrest against him, but the accused lawyer pleaded to be given more time to produce his client to take plea.
Lawyer Ouma Otieno for the accused told the Court that his client and family were suffering from dengue fever and were admitted at BeyoundScope Hospital in Kisauni for treatment.
“I wish to be put on record for the accused person. The accused is unwell. He has suffered dengue fever, his child also has suffered dengue fever. I am requesting a date next week for him to come and take a plea, I WISH TO TENDER Copies of his treatment from BeyondScope Hospital,” he said.
According to court documents, Shakil is charged with stealing his employer’s property totaling Ksh6,952, 610, between May, 2024 and February, 2025 at their premises in Changamwe, Mombasa.
Shakil was later arrested on 27th MARCH, 2025 after Shazia Firoz, a complainant in the case and director of Gateway Marine Services reported the matter to the police.

He was thereafter released on Ksh50,000 police bond, awaiting his arraignment in court on Friday, 23th May, 2025.
The accused will now appear in court next Tuesday, 27th May, 2025 to face the theft charges and take plea.
