The inclusion of top Orange Democratic Movement leaders into President William Samoei Ruto’s government has severely crippled the opposition in and out of Parliament to an extent of disarray.

Apart from triggering ripples through Kenya’s political landscape, some of opposition leaders under the umbrella of Azimio-One Kenya Coalition are withdrawing their membership citing betrayal by one of its principal parties.

The ODM, traditionally known as the defender of wananchi against the ruling party, finds itself on the receiving end of Kenyans’ flaks for allowing its prominent figures to be appointed as cabinet secretaries.

Critics worry that this integration blurs the lines between the government and the opposition, thus, potentially weakening the checks and balances essential for a healthy democracy.

But supporters of the move see otherwise arguing that having ODM leaders within the cabinet provides an opportunity to influence policy from within, therefore, ensuring that its party’s agendas and needs of its supporters are addressed at the highest levels of government.

They say this pragmatic approach will lead to more substantial progress on critical issues such as economic reforms, social justice, and national unity.

However, this strategic shift has been met with disdain among Kenyans from all walks of life who think ODM was benefiting from where it did not sow!

Many within the ODM base view it as a betrayal of the party’s foundational principles.

Most of its supporters fear that the party’s voice will be diluted and the opposition’s role as a watchdog will be compromised.

This worry and concern has precipitated calls to reinvigorate the to give it its oomph to check the excesses of the government in power.

Political analysts and civil society leaders are urging the ODM to redefine its role so as to strengthen its efforts to hold the government accountable, regardless of its leaders’ new positions.

They emphasize that a robust opposition is crucial for a functioning democracy, providing a necessary counterbalance to the ruling party’s power.

In this period of transition, the ODM faces a critical challenge – how will it maintain its integrity and effectiveness as an opposition force while some of its leaders are working with the government?

The coming months will be crucial in determining whether the ODM can navigate this complex political landscape and emerge as a stronger, more united party.

The Kenyan public, too, has a role to play while active civic engagement and vigilance will be essential to ensure that the government remains accountable and transparent.

As the political dynamics shift, the citizens’ voice and participation will be vital in shaping the country’s future.

Lastly, the ODM’s entry into Ruto’s Cabinet marks a significant moment in Kenyan politics. It presents both opportunities and risks, and how the party and the public respond will shape the nation’s democratic trajectory.

The call for a revived opposition is not just about party politics; it is about safeguarding the principles of democracy and ensuring that all voices are heard in the governance of the country.
