TSC Warns Against Political Interference in Teacher Transfers

Teachers Service Commission chief executive officer (CEO) Eveleen Mitei has warned against political interference in the transfer of teachers, insisting that the mandate lies solely with the commission.

Speaking during the 49th Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association annual conference in Mombasa on Wednesday, June 24, 2026 Mitei said TSC had invested in measures to end teacher shortages in public schools.

She urged principals with excess teachers to release them for deployment to schools facing shortages.

“We do not need interference from anyone. Any transfer is a mandate of TSC and not any other person,” she said.

The CEO called on the National Assembly Education Committee to protect teachers from victimisation.

She said TSC would welcome proposals for transfers but would only act within the law and regulations, not under political influence.

This comes amid calls by some politicians for the transfer of teachers from certain schools, a move TSC termed illegal.

She announced that TSC would next month begin implementing the second phase of the teachers’ collective bargaining agreement (CBA).

She asked teachers to give accurate information during a job evaluation exercise to be conducted by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.

“As principals, tell SRC what you do. Don’t tell them you are doing nothing. Once we submit the job description to SRC, they will soon start evaluating teachers,” she said.

The TSC boss backed ongoing education reforms, including the review of teacher registration saying the commission was committed to ending prolonged teacher shortages.

“We have a rapidly changing education landscape, we should be ready to handle it. We have resource constraints but we have all of you to manage with whatever is available,” she said.
