United Democratic Alliance secretary general Hassan Omar has criticised Mombasa County leadership of poor governance and poor development.

Speaking in Mombasa, the SG singled out Governor Abdulswamad Nassir telling him to stop “playing victim” and claims of marginalisation and instead account for his performance in office since August 2022.

Omar, who also serves as a member of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), said the Coast region was well represented in government and should focus on delivering tangible development.

“Every development is by the national government. People are creating a perception of being marginalised. As Coast people, we are not-we have reaped a lot from the current government.”

The former first Mombasa senator challenged local leaders to move away from political rhetoric and prioritise job creation, especially for young people.

He dismissed ongoing political pressure surrounding employment at the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) urging leaders to respect due process.

“You should stop complaining about port employment because there are procedures. Who will speak for the young people who do not have a godfather?” he posed.

The party boss was speaking during a grassroots meeting with party aspirants held at the Nyali offices on Tuesday, March 18, 2026.

The meeting brought together UDA delegates from across Mombasa County including former Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo.

He also weighed in on the region’s political direction, dismissing the notion of a single political kingpin at the Coast.

“Coast will not have a kingpin. People will sit, dialogue and agree on a political path,” he said.

At the national level, the SG took a swipe at former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of promoting divisive politics and undermining President William Ruto.

He urged leaders to avoid ethnic-based politics and instead rally behind the government’s development agenda, while drumming up support for Ruto’s re-election.

On his part, Mbogo echoed Omar’s sentiments by faulting the current Mombasa leadership for what he described as failure to deliver on its mandate.

He called on residents to reconsider their political choices in future elections.
