Malindi town has finally got a Kenya Medical Training College after a long-standing land dispute with the management of a local secondary school.
Malindi MP Amina Mnyazi led leaders including the deputy chief executive officer (DCEO) of KMTC Dr Nyawera Mwangi, Kilifi deputy governor Flora Chibule, health Kilifi county executive committee member (CECM) Peter Mwarogo and Shella ward member of County Assembly in the groundbreaking ceremony of its construction on a ten acre piece of land hived from Malindi High school.
The legislator said that Malindi town was growing tremendously and its large population needed improved health provision which the KMTC graduates would offer.
She added that some politicians had previously incited residents against construction of the college for political reasons despite the growing need of medical practitioners in the area.

“The dream of having a KTMC college in Malindi has been fulfilled and those who were making politics out of it should be ashamed. The patient population in our hospitals need an increased number of service providers and this facility will produce graduates that will serve that purpose,” she said.
Malindi town is served by two major public hospitals including the Malindi Subcounty Hospital and the Muyeye Mother Hospital which are serving a huge patient population with referrals from Tana River and Lamu counties.
Dr Mwangi said that she would avail students in the college when it meets necessary requirements of a medical training facility and thanked the local leadership for providing enough land for the project.
“This facility will bring a lot of other developments in this area and people will get employment opportunities and trade will improve,” she said.

Her sentiments were echoed by Abdulkarim who challenged residents to take advantage of the project to invest in income generating activities.
Malindi senior assistant county commissioner Brian Kirui said that the construction site would employ local youth hence reduce unemployment and crime in the area.
