Kenya has declared its commitment to work with India in order to strengthen maritime security at the regional waters of the Indian Ocean faced with growing threats from illegal activities.

Speaking aboard the Indian naval ship INS Trikand, Major General Paul Owuor Otieno, on behalf of Chief of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) General Charles Kahariri, said the partnership between the two countries remains critical in addressing the emerging security challenges in the Indian Ocean.

“This gathering brings together two friendly navies and maritime neighbours, united not only by the waters of the Indian Ocean, but by a shared vision of security, stability and prosperity within this vital maritime space,” he said.

He noted that the Indian Ocean remains a strategic lifeline for both nations, supporting trade, livelihoods and global connectivity, but he warned that it is increasingly under threat.

“Illegal fishing, trafficking of narcotics, arms, piracy and other illicit maritime activities continue to undermine security and economic development across our region,” he said.

According to him such threats are complex and cannot be tackled by a single country, thus, calling for stronger cooperation and partnerships.

“No single nation can effectively address them in isolation. They demand a coordinated, cooperative and sustained response anchored in trust.”

He noted that the Indian Navy has been instrumental in capacity building, training and operational cooperation.

“Through joint engagements and  port visits such as this as well as  continued professional exchanges, we have steadily enhanced interoperability and mutual understanding between our two navies.”

The military officer underscored the importance of cooperation at sea. He said it goes beyond presence to ensuring freedom of navigation, safeguarding lawful commerce and maintaining an open and secure maritime domain.

“Our shared commitment to these principles is what binds us as maritime partners.”

He lauded the Government of India for its continued support to Kenya’s defence forces including the donation of INSAS rifles and medical equipment.

“The donation of INSAS rifles and medical equipment is a clear demonstration of India’s enduring commitment to strengthening our capabilities,” he said adding that the support enhances Kenya’s operational readiness and ability to respond to both maritime and humanitarian challenges.

The major general affirmed Kenya’s commitment to deepening ties with India saying the need to align efforts, share expertise, and build a resilient maritime security framework in the Indian Ocean.

“The  reception is more than a ceremonial occasion; it is a reaffirmation of friendship, cooperation and shared purpose between our two navies.”

During the event, Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, handed over 100 INSAS rifles and 50,000 rounds of ammunition to Major General Paul Owuor Otieno on behalf of KDF.
