Bamburi Cement Plc has launched its second annual Ramadhan Food Drive.

This year’s initiative has significantly expanded its reach, targeting approximately 4,000 families across Kenya and extending into new regions, including Matuga.

Launched in 2025 after the Amsons Group acquired Bamburi Cement Plc, the food drive partners with local communities to offer solidarity to the country’s most vulnerable households during the Holy Month.

In its second year, the programme now supports about 30,000 individuals indirectly who might otherwise struggle to break their fast.

The 2026 drive has broadened its vision of community support to include Kenya Prisons facilities, orphanages, and children’s homes.

The 2026 Food Drive was officially launched today February 24, 2026 at Afra Hall in Mombasa Town.

Deliveries will target various locations across Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Machakos, and Nairobi counties, where Bamburi Cement operates.

The Ramadhan initiatives will conclude with an Iftar dinner for stakeholders and customers.

“This initiative is rooted in the values of compassion and inclusivity,” said Tawakal Rajab Sumba, Amsons Group country representative.

“By expanding into areas like Matuga and increasing beneficiary numbers, we are strengthening our partnership with the communities we serve,” he said.

The Bamburi Cement Ramadhan Food Drive is a flagship social responsibility initiative aimed at alleviating food hardship for Muslim faithful from sunrise to sunset.

This year’s edition marks a milestone in the company’s commitment to sustainable community impact across the Coast region and beyond.

Sumba emphasized that the company views CSR not as a one-off event but as a continuous engagement with communities, aimed at addressing pressing social challenges such as food insecurity, healthcare access and youth empowerment.

Beyond food distribution, the company has announced plans to invest approximately Sh50 million in the construction of a cancer center in Mombasa County in partnership with other stakeholders.

“The most important project we are undertaking, currently at an early stage, is the construction of a cancer center here in Mombasa at a cost of about Sh50 million,” he said.

According to him the proposed facility will help ease the burden on cancer patients who are often forced to travel long distances to seek specialized treatment.

Once complete, the centre is expected to enhance access to screening, early diagnosis and treatment services within the Coast region.

The healthcare investment underscores Amsons Group’s long-term vision of contributing to sustainable community development beyond its core business operations.

Residents welcomed the initiative, terming it timely and impactful, especially as many families grapple with rising living costs.

Fatma Mote, popularly known as Fatma Kushe, applauded the company for remembering the less privileged during the holy month.

She said the support restores hope and dignity to struggling households.

“Mombasa has many vulnerable families who need assistance to continue observing Ramadhan peacefully. This support means a lot to us.”

Muslim religious leader and trustee of Serani Sports Ground, Zubeir Noor observed that the number of urban poor has been increasing due to tough economic times.

“We applaud the initiative by Amsons Group because they are filling the gap for those who have nothing to eat. This CSR effort is timely and will go a long way in helping many people,” he said.

The leader added that partnerships between private companies and communities are essential in addressing social inequalities and strengthening social cohesion.

Ramadhan is a sacred month in Islam during which Muslims fast from dawn to sunset. Fasting is mandatory for all healthy adult Muslims, except those who are ill, travelling, elderly, pregnant, breastfeeding or menstruating.

During this period, believers partake in two main meals suhoor (pre-dawn) and iftar (sunset).

Beyond abstaining from food and drink, the month emphasizes charity, compassion and generosity toward the less fortunate  values that resonate with initiatives such as the Amsons CSR programme.

As thousands of families prepare for daily iftar meals, the expanded food distribution is expected to ease financial pressure and allow beneficiaries to observe the holy month with dignity and peace of mind.

The expanded CSR drive by Amsons Group not only addresses immediate needs but also reinforces the company’s image as a socially responsible corporate citizen committed to transforming lives.
