The coastal region has received a significant economic and tourism boost as Mombasa County hosts the much-anticipated East Africa Ocean Festival (TEAOF) 2025, an international event that has drawn visitors from across the globe.

Slated for Wednesday October 9–11, 2025, this year’s festival will take place at the iconic Fort Jesus and the Tudor Water Sports complex, offering a vibrant celebration of ocean culture, water sports, and Swahili heritage.

The festival program features a diverse lineup of activities including the thrilling Dragon Boat competition, a heritage camel race, traditional dhow sailing, and deep-sea fishing.

Additionally, attendees will be treated to performances by local artists and vibrant cultural exhibitions that highlight the region’s rich maritime traditions.

Participants in the festival include the Kenya Navy, Kenya Coast Guard, Madhubaa Beach Club, Burahania Beach Club, the Technical University of Mombasa, the Tourist Police, and Beach Management Units all of whom were seen making final preparations on Tuesday ahead of the competitions.

According to TEAOF Co-founder Stephanie Maseki, the event is more than just a celebration, it’s a strategic driver of socio-economic growth for the region.

“The festival has created numerous new job opportunities for the youth in areas such as photography and event logistics. It’s also stimulating the local economy, especially in the tours and travel sector,” said Maseki during a press briefing on October 8, 2025 held at the Tudor Creek.

“One of the major highlights will be the ocean-based sporting events, including competitive swimming, canoe races, and traditional dhow sailing. Spectators will also enjoy jet-ski stunts and a sailing competition that showcases both local and international talent,” she added.

Seif Fatwa, head of ocean sports at TEOF, called on Mombasa residents to turn up in large numbers to experience the unique blend of cultural displays, ocean sports, and live entertainment.

“This festival puts Mombasa on the map as a leading tourist destination in East Africa. It’s not just about the fun, it’s about pride in our heritage and the opportunity to learn about the blue economy,” Fatwa noted.

Mombasa County tourism CECM Mohamed Osman, emphasized the importance of responsible tourism and environmental awareness, urging attendees to participate in coastal conservation efforts.

“We want to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our coastal environment,” Osman said. “We encourage all residents and visitors to get involved in beach cleanups and mangrove restoration efforts. Let’s enjoy the festival while taking care of our ocean.”

As anticipation builds for TEAOF 2025, all signs point to a transformative event — one that not only entertains, but also educates and economically uplifts the Mombasa community, while reinforcing the region’s reputation as a vibrant hub for maritime tourism.
