Mombasa County is set for a major economic and cultural boost as it prepares to host the United Nations World Tourism Week 2025.

The event kicks off from September 25th to 28th and is expected to attract over 4,000 local and international visitors, with key celebrations taking place at Mama Ngina Waterfront.

With this year’s theme, “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” the global tourism festival will position Mombasa as a leading destination for eco-friendly travel, cultural heritage, and coastal tourism experiences.

Speaking at a press briefing, Dr. Sam Ikwaye, Chairman of the Mombasa Tourism Council, described the event as a ‘game-changer for the region’s tourism sector’noting that it will not only boost visitor numbers but also generate significant revenue for local businesses.

“This is our opportunity to showcase Mombasa’s vibrant culture, cuisine, and hospitality to the world. We are welcoming all guests with traditional music, dance, and a taste of our rich culinary heritage,” Dr. Ikwaye said.

A key highlight of the event is the return of the Fish Mish Festival, which will celebrate the coastal city’s renowned seafood dishes and traditional street foods such as mishkaki. The festival will run from September 26th to 28th at Mama Ngina Waterfront.

Hotels, lodges, restaurants, and tour operators across the region are preparing for an influx of visitors. Organizers have urged hospitality businesses to offer discounted rates during the event to encourage domestic tourism and increase guest occupancy.

Beach hotels like Travellers Beach Hotel, one of the festival’s partners, have already pledged support. The hotel will reward the winner of a tuk tuk rally—a local cultural transport experience—with an all-expense-paid, three-night stay at the facilities.

Environmental sustainability will also be at the heart of the event. Organizers have planned tree planting exercises in areas such as Mapembeni and Uhuru Gardens, reinforcing the county’s commitment to green tourism practices.

Visitors will also enjoy cultural exhibitions featuring traditional dance, herbal medicine, and authentic coastal cuisine, offering immersive experiences that celebrate the region’s diverse heritage.

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sharrif Nassir urged local residents to take pride in the event and participate actively.

“We are thrilled to welcome the world to Mombasa. This is a chance to showcase our incredible hospitality and our dedication to sustainable, future-oriented tourism,” said Governor Nassir.

Tourism stakeholders believe the event will have long-lasting benefits beyond the four-day celebration. It is expected to open new avenues for investment in hospitality, enhance international partnerships, and stimulate infrastructure improvements.

The UN World Tourism Week 2025 comes at a time when Kenya is aggressively marketing itself as a leading tourism destination in Africa. By spotlighting Mombasa, the event could further elevate Kenya’s global tourism standing.
