Lamu County in Kenya and Jubbaland State of Somalia have officially entered into a groundbreaking partnership to promote tourism and cultural development.
This initiative marks a historic milestone in strengthening regional cooperation, peacebuilding, and economic growth along the East African coast.
Shared History Rekindled
Before colonialism, the coastal stretch from Kismayu to Zanzibar was governed by a single king, uniting the coastal people under one cultural and maritime identity.
This collaboration between Lamu and Jubbaland seeks to *revive those historical ties*, reconnect disintegrated communities, and channel their shared identity into peace, cultural revival, and economic prosperity.
Jubbaland’s Tourism Potential

The Minister of Tourism and Culture of Jubbaland Abdifatah Mohamed Mukhtaar*, emphasized Jubbaland’s role as Somalia’s tourism hub, highlighting its unique blend of pristine coastlines and rich cultural sites.
> “Jubbaland is the tourism hub of Somalia. We are blessed with some of the country’s most beautiful coastlines, natural sites, and cultural heritage that can attract visitors globally. This partnership with Lamu County opens new doors for regional cooperation and sustainable development,” said Mukhtaar.
Among Jubbaland’s key attractions are:
Goobweyn – serene coastlines and pristine beaches.
Kooyaame – a historic and culturally rich site.
Isku Darka– a natural wonder where the river meets the sea.
Lamu’s Perspective
The Governor of Lamu County welcomed the partnership, framing it as a continuation of long-standing cultural and social ties.
“Tourism is at the heart of development for both Lamu and Jubbaland. We share coastlines, culture, and history. This partnership will not only promote economic growth but also create jobs and preserve our shared heritage,” the Governor stated.
Cultural Festival to Unite Communities
As part of the agreement, both sides will host a Joint Cultural Festival along the Kenya–Jubbaland border, showcasing traditional music, art, and heritage. This event will symbolize unity, peace, and cultural pride, while strengthening trade and people-to-people ties.
Peacebuilding and Coordination.
The visit and coordination of this initiative were spearheaded by Shee Kupi Shee, Dep. Director of Peacebuilding and Conflict Management at the Department of Public Service Management – Office of the Governor, Lamu County.
Reflecting on the partnership, he noted:

“I find solace and pride to see two sides coming together for the common good—a situation we have awaited since the times of the civil war. The time is now for the two borders to bring their thoughts together, strengthen ties, and promote sustainable development through peacebuilding and joint investment.”
Looking Ahead
This partnership represents more than just tourism promotion but it is a reawakening of history, culture, and unity. By merging peacebuilding with economic opportunity, Lamu County and Jubbaland are charting a path toward regional integration, prosperity, and lasting stability.
