Mvita Residents Receive Free Eye Medication Courtesy of a TV Celebrity

More than 500 residents of Majengo area with various eye complications got a free eye care treatment during an eye clinic held on Sunday, May11, 2025 at the Majengo Dispensary of Mombasa County.
The free clinic, sponsored by Lulu ya Jamii foundation in conjunction with The Rotary Club of Kilindini in Mombasa, saw five patients undergo eye surgery.
The treatment entailed eye screening, eye operation and issuance of eye glasses after assessment by a host of specialised doctors both from the county and Mombasa Eye Hospital and Laiser Center.
Speaking at the event where hundreds had turned up for the service, Lulu Ya Jamii Foundation patron and Citizen TV anchor Lulu Hassan said the treatment was part of the corporate social responsibility (CSR).
“The turn up is huge. This is an indication that many people have challenges of accessibility to health care, and maybe due to poverty or are not aware whether that have health problems,” she said.

The anchor asked relevant authorities to come on board and support the communities with free treatment as a majority of them were facing harsh challenges.
She added: “Five will undergo operation while others will get reading glasses. We also looked at high blood pressure and diabetes and the number is overwhelming. This is just a start, and we will do more others.”
Kilindini Rotary Club chairman (Rtn) Anil Dodhia said more free clinics were underway in Mvita Constituency to treat residents of diseases and health complications.
According to him the rotary club has over period of time offered eye care camps and water distribution.
He said beneficiaries of the eye operation would be done in collaboration with Mombasa Eye Hospital using the modern technology.
The event witnessed a very huge crowds of people seeking treatment from various physical ailments.
“We vouch for a healthy society, therefore, we promise after this clinic. We will organise more treatments in future dates maybe in two to three weeks which we will announce for the residents,” he said.
On his part, Pradeep Agawal, a consultant from Mombasa Eye Hospital, said many residents endured eye complications as they aged up.The glasses will be delivered in collaboration with Mombasa Eye Hospital.

“Most of the people are not aware whether they are sick. We are screening them and if they need specialized treatment, including glaucoma treatment we will treat them,” he said.
Some of the beneficiaries of the free treatment expressed their joy thanking the partners for their generous gestures.
“We are happy at least some people can be able to remember us. I personally have challenges of eyesight, and I needed glasses. I’m glad I am a beneficiary,” said one of the beneficiaries who sought anonymity.
