Kenya and the Netherlands have enjoyed a strong and friendly partnership since 1963.

This week, His Majesty King Willem-Alexander and Her Majesty Queen Maxima of the Netherlands are on a state visit to Kenya, aimed at deepening the ties between the two countries.

The visit focuses on exploring new opportunities for collaboration in areas such as agricultural innovation, digitalization, healthcare, logistics, and water management, along with Dutch initiatives aimed at supporting education and youth employment in Kenya.

The King’s visit is also an opportunity to further boost trade relations, he is accompanied by representatives from over 50 Dutch companies interested in investment and business opportunities across various sectors, including tourism, agriculture, and security.

The Netherlands ranks as one of Kenya’s top three trading partners and the largest within the European Union, making this meeting a vital opportunity to address both the challenges and potential of their economic ties.

In 2023, Kenya’s exports to the Netherlands totaled Ksh91.427 billion, with flowers and agricultural products being the main items. The Dutch side, in turn, exports animal feeds, petroleum products, and telecommunications equipment.

In 2013, the Netherlands shifted its approach to development cooperation with Kenya, emphasizing trade and investment over traditional aid.

This move has encouraged a more business-driven relationship between the two nations, positioning the private sector as a key driver of development.

Additionally, a Joint Trade Committee was formed to enhance market access and improve the business environment for both nations.

For Kenya, one of the key benefits of this relationship is the strengthening of logistics for fresh produce exports.

The two nations have signed agreements to improve the transportation of horticultural products by sea, potentially doubling exports and creating up to three million new jobs in agriculture and logistics.

The Inland Container Depot is already working with the Netherlands to ensure the sustainability of perishables transport.

While Kenya welcomes the Dutch visit, it’s crucial that discussions about innovation, trade, and security remain transparent.

This will ensure that Dutch companies adhere to local regulations and treat Kenyan workers fairly.

Furthermore, both countries must continue their cooperation on global issues like countering violent extremism, climate change, and food security.

Beyond trade, His Majesty King Willem-Alexander will also meet with Kenyan youth to discuss issues like human rights, democracy, and youth unemployment.

This dialogue will be a chance to explore solutions to the challenges facing young people in Kenya.

Ultimately, the visit of the Dutch Royals will mark a significant milestone in further strengthening Kenya-Netherlands relations.
