Mombasa, Kenya: East Africa’s Orthodox tea industry is gaining global momentum with stakeholders projecting a sharp rise in international demand driven by wellness trends and ethical consumerism.
With global demand for Orthodox tea growing at over six percent annually, experts believe the region is uniquely positioned to become a world leader in the sector.
Favorable climate and soil conditions, combined with growing consumer interest in traceable and sustainably produced goods, present a golden opportunity for East Africa to tap into a multi-billion-dollar market.
Speaking during the official launch of Orthodox Tea Day in Mombasa, Uganda’s High Commissioner Eunice Kigenyi emphasised the untapped potential of African Orthodox teas.
“Orthodox tea offers numerous benefits, including a rich flavor profile and high antioxidant content. These qualities make it highly attractive to global consumers seeking both quality and health benefits.”

The event, organized by the East African Tea Trade Association (EATTA), brought together industry leaders and stakeholders with a shared mission to position African Orthodox tea as a global brand of excellence.
Commissioner Kigenyi urged the industry to focus on three key pillars: enhancing quality, embracing digital platforms, and promoting sustainable practices.
“To fully unlock the potential of Orthodox tea, we must ensure quality and consistency through training and certification programs.
We also need to leverage e-commerce and digital platforms to reach global buyers, and adopt eco-friendly practices to appeal to environmentally conscious markets.”
The envoy noted that Orthodox tea production could be a major economic driver for the region, thus, creating thousands of jobs and boosting local economies.

“The Orthodox tea industry has the potential to create a wave of prosperity across East Africa.”
With renewed focus, collaboration, and innovation, the official opening of Orthodox Tea Day marks the dawn of a new era for the region’s tea industry. One defined by global competitiveness, sustainability, and shared growth.
