Senator Edwin Sifuna has been removed as the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) secretary general following national executive committee (NEC)’s decisive resolution in a meeting held in Mombasa on February 11, 2026.

In a press statement issued after the over five hours indoor meeting, which the SG failed to attend, the committee raised concerns over discipline and leadership conduct within the party.

The NEC announced that the deputy SG Catherine Omanyo will take over in an acting capacity pending the election of a substantive office holder.

“Effectively, the DSG, who is Busia Women representative will act in this position until a substantive holder of the position is elected,” the statement said.

“Having deliberated on matters relating to the conduct of the SG Sen Edwin Sifuna, the NEC resolved to remove him from office with immediate effect in accordance with the Party Constitution and applicable laws,” the statement read.

The committee underscored that ODM remains guided by its Constitution, the rule of law and collective decision-making through its duly constituted organs.

“The removal of Sifuna was part of broader resolutions adopted during the high-level meeting, where the NEC expressed “grave concern over the rising levels of indiscipline within the Party, particularly at the senior leadership level,” said Omanyo while reading the statement.

Beyond the leadership shake-up, the NEC also resolved to initiate the formal process of withdrawing from the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition, citing sustained breaches of the coalition agreement by some partners.

“In light of these sustained breaches and in order to safeguard the integrity, autonomy, and strategic direction of ODM, the NEC resolved to initiate the formal process of withdrawal from the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition,” the statement noted.

Additionally, the NEC adopted Central Committee resolutions mandating the Party Leader to oversee pre-election coalition negotiations and called for the mandatory allocation of KSh450 billion to counties in the supplementary budget.

The committee also demanded adequate funding for compensation of victims of human rights violations through the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR).

The party further announced it would convene a national delegates convention (NDC) in Nairobi on March 27, 2026, to deliberate on the party’s strategic direction and prepare for the upcoming general election.

The statement was issued in Mombasa on February 11, 2026 during the ODM National executive meeting.
