The recognition of Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA) as the best institution and board on governance during the recent induction workshop for Boards of State Corporations at Lake Naivasha Resort marks a defining moment in Kenya’s journey toward strengthening governance and accountability in the public sector.

This distinction, awarded in a competitive forum organized by the Institute of Certified Secretaries (ICS) in collaboration with the State Corporations Advisory Committee (SCAC), is not merely a ceremonial accolade. It is a testament to BMA’s transformative leadership, visionary management, and steadfast commitment to excellence in public service.

The academy’s delegation, led by its chairman Eng Lung’anzi Chai Mangale and chief executive officer Dr Eric Katana, exemplified a leadership team united by purpose and guided by principles of transparency, integrity, and performance.

Their recognition did not occur in isolation; it was the culmination of deliberate reforms and strategic governance practices that have positioned BMA as a model institution within Kenya’s evolving maritime and blue economy ecosystem.

The academy’s success demonstrates what is achievable when institutional leadership aligns with national development aspirations and international best practices.

In his remarks during the award ceremony, Dr Katana attributed this achievement to the dedication and professionalism of both the board and staff, underscoring that the recognition reflects BMA’s ongoing pursuit of excellence rather than a one-off accomplishment.

Indeed, the academy has, over recent years, redefined its operational culture by embedding values of accountability, teamwork, and ethical leadership into every aspect of its operations.

This is particularly commendable at a time when public institutions across Africa are under increasing scrutiny to deliver results efficiently, manage resources prudently, and maintain public trust.

The BMA’s governance framework stands out because it goes beyond compliance with standard public sector guidelines. It reflects a culture of proactive leadership that fosters collaboration, encourages innovation, and integrates performance-based management systems.

This approach ensures that every decision made by the board and management contributes meaningfully to the institution’s core mandate—developing a highly skilled maritime workforce to drive Kenya’s blue economy agenda.

The recognition at Naivasha, therefore, serves not only as validation of these efforts, but also as motivation to sustain and scale them across other state corporations.

Good governance in public institutions is not an abstract concept. It translates directly into improved service delivery, enhanced institutional credibility, and sustainable national development.

For BMA, whose mandate is to train seafarers, maritime engineers, and other professionals vital to Kenya’s maritime industry, strong governance translates into tangible outcomes—efficient training programs, better partnerships with international maritime stakeholders, and greater employability of Kenyan seafarers in global markets.

The academy’s achievements in these areas mirror the governance excellence it has now been recognized for.

Moreover, the timing of this recognition could not be more significant. Kenya’s blue economy is emerging as a cornerstone of the nation’s long-term development strategy, with the government investing heavily in port modernization, shipbuilding, and maritime education.

As such, BMA’s leadership in governance sets a high standard for institutions charged with implementing this ambitious agenda. It signals that Kenya’s maritime future will be anchored not only on infrastructure and technical capacity, but also on sound management principles and ethical leadership.

The workshop in Naivasha, which brought together board members from diverse state corporations, was designed to enhance the very values that BMA exemplifies—good governance, accountability, and effective leadership.

That BMA emerged at the top among its peers demonstrates that the institution has successfully internalized these principles and transformed them into operational reality.

It is an institution that does not merely train seafarers; it trains them within a system governed by discipline, order, and professionalism—values that are foundational to maritime success worldwide.

As Kenya continues to align its maritime education and governance structures with global standards, the BMA’s example should inspire other state agencies to strengthen their governance frameworks and adopt result-oriented management cultures.

The ripple effects of such transformation would be profound, leading to greater efficiency, reduced corruption, and more impactful delivery of public services across sectors.

In celebrating BMA’s milestone, it is equally important to recognize the leadership philosophy that has driven this success—a philosophy rooted in teamwork, integrity, and shared responsibility.

Under the stewardship of Eng Mangale and Dr Katana, the academy has cultivated an environment where governance is not just about compliance, but about continuous improvement and institutional excellence.

Ultimately, the recognition of BMA as the best-governed state corporation board in Kenya is a victory for professionalism, ethics, and visionary public service. It demonstrates that when leadership is accountable, systems are strong, and people are empowered, excellence naturally follows.

In the broader context of Kenya’s blue economy ambitions, BMA’s governance triumph is not just an institutional success—it is a national beacon of hope that the maritime sector, and indeed the entire public service, can be steered to global standards of performance and integrity.
