A storm is brewing in Barsuba area within Lamu County with a section of residents questioning the citizenship of the current ward representative Dekoo Bana Barisa whom they allege is a Somali refugee.

Some residents have alleged that Dekoo obtained his citizenship status fraudulently through the then provincial administration in 1991 when his family allegedly came to Kenya from Somali because of the then Siad Barre instigated conflict in Somali.

Bario Godana, a Barsuba resident who spoke to The Coast newspaper in Kiangwe, stated that the current ward representative may have not been born in Kenya since area residents saw him come with his family to Kiangwe in 11991.

Sentiments echoed by Jillo Abdi who stated that the current MCA was adopted by a Kenyan named Bana Barisa.

Though according to documents which are under the custodian of the MCA, indicate that Dekoo was born in Barsuba in early 1993.

Further investigations revealed that his adopted “step mother” Mama Amina who was also interviewed denied any knowledge of where Dekoo Barisa came from.

She said according to the best of her knowledge she met Dekoo after being married by Bana Barisa.

“Dekoo was not  born in Barsuba 1991 as it was documented but he came to Kenya from Somali that year,”   Jiba Kimango, a Barsuba resident insisted.

However, Barsuba MCA Dekoo Bana Barisa refuted the claims that he is not a Kenyan citizen terming those behind that crusade are his political detractors out to malign his name.

“These are schemes being hatched by my political rivals to malign my name, they’d rather take the matter to court if they don’t trust me,” Barisa stated.

He reiterated that Barsuba residents know where he was born terming the allegations that he was born in Somali as untrue.

“Some politicians have resorted to hatching underground schemes meant to detract my development agenda  for the Barsuba ward which is one of the most marginalized areas in the country but there is no way they will win this course” Barisa said.

An affidavit by a village elder Mzee Salat lodged with the Lamu County District Criminal investigations officer further questioned the place of birth of the ward representative.

This is the first time the MCA to be elected in office after he trounced his opponents in the August elections and announced the winner through a NASA affiliated party Amani National Congress ANC which is headed by Musalia Mudavadi.

The government has not come clear on the allegations leveled against the MCA though fully aware of the truth of the matter.
