Port operations in Lamu are beginning to take shape with the construction of KPA staff houses set to be completed in May 2018.

Transport PS Professor Paul Maringa during an inspection of the LAPSSET project in Lamu yesterday stated that the first phase of housing units will be completed in March this year.

The completion of KPA housing units has in the past two years has been marred by insecurity, and underfunding that has led to the housing project’s completion delay.

The Kshs 1 billion housing project has also faced delays due to poor funding from the national treasury which has since last year September 2017 enforced an austerity policy cutting budgets across all government funded projects.

Rampant insecurity particularly in the Lamu mainland area has hampered the contractor from completing the project by last year.

“There are also plans to  build 38 two and three bedroom houses for police officers as well as a community health center and a  port officers mess,” the Transport PS stated.

He also urged the contractor to adhere to the given timelines so as to remain on schedule for the handover to port staff once one of  the three government funded berths is completed.

“We have received assurances from security agents that the contractor and his workers as well as the infrastructure will be protected and that enough personnel have been deployed to ensure safety of the project,” Professor Mwaringa stated.

Sentiments echoed by Chief Engineer Hilary Nyaanga from the state department of public works who stated that the project will no longer experience delays that has hindered the contractor from completing the project.
